About the Author
Thomas Hughes (1822-1896), who also wrote under the pseudonym An Old Boy, was an English lawyer and author. He was elected to Parliament as a Liberal for Lambeth (1865-1868), and for Frome (1868-1874). An avid social reformer, he became interested in the Christian socialism movement led by Frederick Maurice, which he had joined in 1848. In 1880 he founded a settlement in America - Rugby, Tennessee - which was designed as an experiment in utopian living for second sons of the English gentry, although this later proved largely unsuccessful. Hughes is most famous for his novel Tom Brown's School Days (1857), a semi-autobiographical work set at Rugby School, which Hughes had attended. It had a lesser-known sequel, Tom Brown at Oxford (1861). He also wrote Religio Laici (1868), Life of Alfred the Great (1869) and Memoir of a Brother (1873).
Tom Brown's Schooldays still appeals to modern readers. Like modern young adults, Tom and the other boys at Rugby suffer pangs of separation from family, stand up against peer bullies, ponder the ambiguities of friendship and the finality of death, and gradually assume adult responsibilities. Tom is no saint; like his American contemporary Huckleberry Finn, he gets into trouble with authority. Beautifully illustrated, this classic tale will capture children's interest and spark their imagination inspiring a lifelong love of literature and reading.

For thirty years, from 1941 to 1971, CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED (originally known as CLASSIC COMICS) introduced GIs, bobby-soxers, and their baby-boom children to "Stories by the World's Greatest Authors"--a category that encompassed Homer's ODYSSEY and Frank Buck's BRING 'EM BACK ALIVE, Shakespeare's HAMLET and Talbot Mundy's KING--OF THE KHYBER RIFLES, Goethe's FAUST and Owen Wister's VIRGINIAN. Although the comic-book series of literary adaptations and biographies was disparaged by educator May Hill Arbuthnot and attacked by crusader Fredric Wertham, it gradually won the applause of skeptics and the affection of at least two generations.
